It is with the deepest sense of respect and grief that CGC expresses its condolences on the passing away of Dr. Malathi de Alwis (6th Oct 1963-21st Jan 2021).
She is a world-renowned feminist anthropologist and feminist scholar activist who has contributed immensely to exploring and fighting militarism and ethnonationalism. Her work on the politicizing of motherhood has been constitutive of an adequate conception of gender relations in Sri Lanka and far beyond. Likewise, her studies on the memorializing of loss were crucial to advance contemporary theories of transnational feminisms. Her contributions to CGC conferences and workshops over many years will continue to be an important stimulus for our work. As one of the many symbols of her absence worldwide, the visiting fellowship she was to take up with us in the summer of 2020, and which we had planned to postpone to the summer of 2021 due to the pandemic, will remain an open gap.
